Chromis in QT, is this Uronema?

Hi everyone!

i recently purchased 5 green Chromis and 1 royal gramma from TSM Aquatics.

Currently the group has been in obersvation QT since 2/15. (12 days ago)

upon arriving the group looked relatively good, with just normal signs of shipping stress. I noticed about 5 days ago one with a red spot on his side.
My first thought was uronema so I’ve just been feeding heavy and seeing if the sore goes away or gets worse. It’s hard to say if I have seen an improvement, but it doesn’t seem to be getting worse either.
Physically the fish seems well and healthy, and is eating like a champ. There is a minimal amount of aggression between them but nothing serious.

What is the communities thoughts on him? The rest of the group doesn’t seem to have any issues and we’re coming up on two weeks in observation.

Thank you in advance!

It looks like the onset of Uronema: Uronema

Do you have a microscope for examining a skin scrape??

Thank you so much for the reply!
Do you think after showing a red spot for 5 days it would still be this heathy? I was thinking maybe it was a bite/ scratch since it hasn’t progressed. I’m avoiding scrapping it to not stress him out further. I do have a microscope but only want to scrap if i absolutely have to.

If he in fact does have Uronema are all the fish that are in QT not safe to add to my display now? Does TSM have a uronema protocol?

That more suggests a bacterial infection (good news): Bacterial Infections

Still, I would dose Metroplex + Kanaplex for good measure.

Does TSM have a uronema protocol?
After Matt's passing, I honestly have no idea what their QT protocol is anymore. They are no longer an approved QT vendor here.

Let me know if it is Uronema they would be a perfect candidate for testing out Melafix.

@Humble.Fish & Reef @Dierks

quick update for you guys, here are some photos from today. It’s looking more grey and less red. Thoughts? Is uronema still considered a possibility here?

it’s been over a week now that I’ve seen the red spot, and the group has been in observation for 15 days.

Are you currently treating with anything? Are you noticing any aggression between them?

Not treating, just observing since they are supposed to be treated already by TSM. Just waiting to see if anything got worse before I begin to treat myself.

i do notice little picking here and there, but not crazy bad.

It's probably a bacterial infection then. Metroplex + Kanaplex is still a good option IMO; or you could just continue to observe & go heavy on the vitamins: Vitamins, Probiotics & Herbal Remedies

@Humblefish @Dierks

here’s another update. Coming up on two weeks since seeing the spot. It’s looking bigger, much more raw and red. See photos.
He otherwise is looking healthy and the otherfish have no issues.

still haven’t done any treatment, just observing to see how it progresses. I did notice an increase in aggression today when watching them as well.

what do you think?

Possibly, if an infected chromis made direct bodily contact.
I looked at the group long and hard and they all look great including the Molly. I do notice pale blotches on the royal grama, but so minor that it might just be his natural color I can’t tell. Maybe a result of being bullied by the Chromis too…
What do you recommend at this point? They’ve been in oberservation for 3 weeks, at what point do I have the green light to put them in the display?

I would add them except for the injured one.

The one Chromis still has the sore and it doesn’t look any better. I’m too nervous to add the fish to my tank with the possibility of bringing uronema. Do you feel confident based on the timeline that this isnt uronema?

i have NFG , Ruby reef rally, methylene blue etc. i can use if you feel that would be useful. I’m just not sure how to progress from here confidently.

the group definitely looks to be getting more aggressive as well in QT.

@Humblefish here’s a pic from this morning. Looks like it is getting bigger.

still haven’t added the group yet, do you still think it’s safe to add the others?

I’m just worried they are carriers.

Do you have Melafix by chance? Wanna try something? We are attempting to save these guys, the melafix will help both if it's uronema and if it's a bacterial issue. You could do the entire group if it would put you more at ease as I understand your concern.

I have Melafix arriving today. I read the link you shared. For this group do you recommend doing 30 minute baths?

The affected chromis looks to be improving. The sore has turned grey, and is no longer red but is still present. The other fish seem to be fine. Something I forgot to mention originally is that a few of them have red streaks behind their eyes. A kind of HLLE I would imagine, but I want to confirm that isn't something else I need to be concerned about.

Also, the royal grammas purple coloration is a bit patchy. Should I just melafix dip the whole group? They've been in observation for over a month now, and I want to add them if I can!

Should I dose the recommended dosage on the bottle into the whole QT or is their a different dose for the bath?
