Fallow periods: Going Fishless

I'd rather go fallow for 4 weeks @ 86F (provided there are no corals/inverts in the tank) in order the preserve the tank's biofilter.
Okay, and that would take care of ich and Flukes? Would I need to black mollie it afterwards? Also can I leave on my algae scrubber and skimmer to still pull stuff out the tank?

I have a mixed reef tank, and lost all my fish, one by one, during the month of May. My best guess is Marine Velvet was the culprit, especially given the suddenness of each fatality. So on Memorial Day I began my fallow period. My intention is to wait until after Labor Day before introducing any new fish. I'm willing to wait longer if need be.

Do I need to consider additional precautions when I restart? Might a UV Sterilizer be worth considering? I'm going to be extremely cautious when adding new fish. I'm sure I know how this disease snuck in, and I won't repeat that mistake again!

I would just raise temp to 81F and begin a 6 week countdown.

And eliminate any hypoxic environments in your tank: Why a fallow period will sometimes fail

Brilliant thread. Is fluke hatching etc impacted by low oxygen environments? I have a few as nitrates well under control with limited water changes.

Have some prazipro resilient flukes in my DT. About to remove the corals/inverts and drop salinity to <15ppm for a couple of weeks.

Awesome. How long would you recommend <15ppt for. I was initially thinking 2 weeks but am tempted to do 4 after this thread.

Have Hanna & tropic marin high precision hydrometer to nail the ppt 😄😄

80.6F for 6 weeks should eliminate all diseases.

86F for 2 weeks will eliminate Ich, and I suspect Velvet as well: New Ich Fallow Period

You'd need to heat the water to 40C/104F for 1 hour to eliminate Ich (see Table 2): FA164/FA164: Cryptocaryon irritans Infections (Marine White Spot Disease) in Fish

However, that temperature would kill most life in your tank (including beneficial bacteria) not to mention what it might do the aquarium seams.
Looks like uronema can survive and thrive at 30C (104F)

Ok so I did the increase temp for 7 weeks and about a week after I placed fish I now see a few small spots now I did add my madrine about 3 a week ago and did ttm but I had to reuse some of my stuff so I cleaned it with bleach and sat out to dry with my hair drier not sure if I could of gotten it from that or not. I’m now going to be doing h2o2 since it’s only a few spots to keep it very low and think it will be able to kill the small amount. But I am keeping the temp up since my fish and coral have better colors and my torch is crazy growing and my nems love the higher temps. Maybe you can help me with where I went wrong. All fish other than mardrine we’re qt at 2.45 copper power for 2 weeks then transferred into the dt. I ad already treated for everything else before I added copper and that was the last half of qt left.

Well, we'll need pics or video. Could be bacterial tufts or viral nodules. I would recommend starting a new thread in the fish disease area. And. Yeah. Warmer temps can be a good thing, but bad thungs happen evwn faster as warmer temps, such as ich or velvet outbreak, bown jelly on corals, ect.

I’ll have to take pic in the morning when my lights come on

@Humblefish My tank had ich outbreak last month, I have removed all fish to qt on 5/22. I don't plan to reintroduce the fish back into this tank. After QT I will move all fish to a new 220g tank. The old tank that had ich outbreak its now in fallow period.
Now, the question is how long should I leave the system fallow? Safe enough for me to move corals and invert to new 220g tank. 42 or 72 days? I keep the temperature at 27C now. I don't plan to move rocks, biomedias or sand over, just inverts and corals.
Thanks!

I had to remove 3 of my fish from my 120g DT into QT due to signs of ich. I need to try and catch my eel but worried about putting him into a 20g QT with my others (could stress them out in a smaller tank). Can I put the eel in my sump and still follow the fallow schedule?

Unfortunately, ALL fish must be removed from a system + sump before a fallow period can start.
