As long as it's alive, OR if it's in a high flow environment and is small enough, I think that most feeds should work. That being said, andrewkw's not the only person who's experienced a ton of hard times converting the fish to dead food. Artemia just works because it's accessible and there's a short/small learning curve (as opposed to pods for example)

At one point when I was breeding them I had gotten a bunch of free samples of Tigger pods from Reef Nutrition from a talk they did at a reef club meeting. I fed a fry that for a few days and they loved them but I ran out quick. I think just about any pod is going to be a superior food source but BBS is just so cheap and easy people tend to do that.
Somehow I never had issues weaning them off live foods. Once they were large enough to go a day without food I'd start weaning then stop all together and sometimes it would take a day but rarely did I ever have to go back to live. Once one gave it a try the rest would catch on immediately. Seemed easiest to go from BBS to frozen spirulina brine shrimp IME.
