We used one of those to line up the hanging kits for our theee ATI Stratons and it helps a ton: General 8 oz Steel Plumb Bob 4 in. L 1 pc - Ace Hardware

I used T-Slot to mount the lights. I attached it to the back of the stand. If I were doing it again I would attach to wall studs, for easier access.
Kinda industrial but it matches the Red Sea look well. I have a lightweight canopy to hide the light glare so I do not see the rails except in the back, all supported by the aluminum rails.

Excellent, I feel much better. 👍

Now if there’s something that WILL drive me nuts, it’s getting the lights to hang right. Any tips for getting these to line up right and not be pulled backwards by the cord? The hanging kits themselves are all in alignment, we used a laser level to make sure of that. @Gspeed is trying to use stiff wire to give the cables a guide but if anyone has other ideas, I’m all ears.

I would have gone with the Kessil tank mounts. Not only for mounting ease, but also because they hide the wires(you can see in the pic I posted on your thread when I asked about the pillow). I had a redsea tank at one point, and dremeled a notch in the lid for the center overflow to accomdate the tank mount clamp(so that the middle light is centered). Worked great.

I had those on my last tank, with the AP700, and they were okay; however, there's not a good way to mount them on the new tank stand, and mounting them on the wall puts them too far back. I didn't want them clamped to the rim because that complicates a tank lid.

We took down the hanging kits yesterday and have come up with a plan for how to mount them. I'll post pics when we're done.

Gotcha, yeah makes sense about the tank lid. :)

Yay. Electric fun….
we discovered the switcher for the power had reversed polarity. Little bit of electrical and fixed.
Also extended the power cord.
Tester shows double green so we’re good👍

I feel like I need to understand electrical more. I can wire outlets, lights, fans, switches etc in a house, and know just a bit of the math and physics from years ago, but I feel like it's one of the things about reefing I'm the least equipped to properly plan for and troubleshoot. I'm easily impressed by people doing their own electrical work on their setups.

I typically don’t like to mess with high voltage. But we were unable to find anything with long enough power cables so I had to extend them. When I was testing with a outlet tester to make sure I didn’t 🦆 up the cord extension, the tester gave 2 errors, current detected while off and polarity reversed. To be honest we had to dig around for a solution. But it ended up only being 2 wires that needed to be swapped. I’m a little more willing to mess with electronics then @Jessican, but I also like working with electronic development stuff.
it’s all about acceptance of risk. If I broke it $60, if it breaks other things plugged in to it $5k. I’m willing to try to fix it at that lvl.

And to be clear, that was because the manufacturer wired it wrong, not because @Gspeed 🦆ed up the cord extension 😂

Still waiting for the light hanging debut. Lol

We’re working on it 😝 We’ve removed the hanging kits, patched, and repainted, and we have all the pieces for the new plan. Hoping to start prepping those today.
