No need for sand. I make it by dripping very slowly in 3 days in a bucket with heater and air stone. Don't forget to put an air stone in the salt water. Despite this, I still haven't had success with red mollies. They die after a maximum of two weeks.

Still no sigh of ich. I have purchased the Sailfin Mollies and am acclimating them to saltwater slowly. I have the 560 and another smaller tank plumbed into the same system for my eel. Would it be OK to put the mollies in the eel system (eel isn't in it yet) or should I put them in the 560 (or split them up?) I have purchased a dozen some are a little small for the flow of the 560 so I thought maybe the eel tank would be better. Thoughts?

The smaller tank with less flow would be better for them. (y)

I have had the mollies 1 week today. I started with 32oz of saltwater into 8 gallons twice a day and on the 3rd day I took out a gallon and added back 64oz twice a day. The water is now at 15 ppt (1.011) would it be safe to up the 64oz twice a day to 96oz or 128 (gallon) twice a day. I wanted to take it slow since some of them were barely an inch long.

You can safely raise them 2-3ppt per day. Just scoop some of their tank water in a cup, and mix salt in that several times per day.

Thank you! Will do, I had been using the water from the 560 to get them used to it and kind of as a pretest on the ich.

Over the weekend I got the mollies to 35ppt so I put the 4 smallest of the 12 sailfin mollies into the tank I had plumbed into the 560 for my eel on Monday. On Tuesday afternoon when I checked there were only 2 left, and they seem to be doing well. No sign of the other two, I assume they were crab food as there are some emerald crabs and blue legs in there to deal with some hair algae. I was a little concerned putting them in as the mollies I purchased were supposed to be 1.5" but most were under 3/4". I only had one that was the 1.5" size and another that is 1.25". I decided to try two of the larger 3/4" in the display where there are no emeralds (that lasted 60 seconds) my wrasse is happy....I never thought he could swallow a 3/4" molly whole he is only 5", I feel bad and lesson learned. I then put the remaining 6 into the eel tank including the two larger ones. I know I need to monitor them a couple times a day.

Question how long if the show no symptoms of ich do I consider the tank clean?

Well I found the two missing sailfins in the sump...must have been a hell of a ride (my sump is pretty rough). They were swimming around in the return pump area....were very hard to catch.

No results yet, i was delayed doing the tests and sending in.

So far so good, the 9 remaining (2 eaten and one I haven't seen since I put it in on Thursday) seem to be doing well. A couple I keep having to retrieve from the sump and one has been in the overflow for a few days.

I'll ask this question again after how long if they show no symptoms of ich do I consider the tank clean? I know the full life cycle of ich is 72 days, so 90 days?
