Well in the never ending saga to fix what isn’t broken, I made a small change today. After running my halides literally decades from 10am to 5pm (7 hours), I decided to extend this an extra hour. I was convinced that my halides were in the obnoxious range (600-900 PAR), but reality checked me and I am much closer to 250-400ish in my coral growing zones. So in an attempt to compensate for that, I decided to run the halides an extra hour. So now they will run from 10am to 6pm, for 8 hours. Of course, this is all to try to squeeze a little more growth out of my grow out coral, the serious circus!

Just documenting so I know when I made the change.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I have an iron problem. My last ICP came back showing I had zero iron. So I started dosing Fergon pills, and bought the Hanna iron checker, HI721. I’ve noticed some problems. My leather has shrunk, my Calerpa is almost all dead after having no problems for 15 years, and another SPS frag died today, the pig champion. I have been watching my iron as I dose, but the checker always reads zero, no matter what I add. So I have been more aggressively dosing iron , trying to get a readable level. Well, I am now convinced that this Hanna reader isn’t capable of reading the low levels and always displays zero. I cleaned my skimmer tonight, and noticed a red stain on the acrylic. Would not wash off. Like a permanent stain, that hasn’t been there in 20+ years. Why now? Gotta be the iron staining. Only thing I can think. I have an ICP test that I will fill and send out in the next day or 2, but I have to believe iron is higher than it should be. Can you see the red stain on the acrylic?

I do see the red stain.
I know you have a huge water volume, but what do you think about a large water change? Or maybe use polyfilter?

What is your total volume?
1 pill has 27mg iron right?
We could calculate how many ug/L 1 pill would raise iron.

I have somewhere around 350 total system gallons.

I have been dissolving 3 pills in about 100ml of water. And I have been dosing around 20ml per day (when I remember). So it has been heavy dosing. Been doing 3 pills for a month or 2 now.

I may have to do a water change this weekend. Gotta do the ICP test first, though.

Thanks. I can’t wait either! Should be fun. That blue rainbow tenuis is already extending very well. Glad to see it’s happy.

Well, here’s my most recent ICP. Most surprising to me was the Na and Cl are low. I guess I’m low on salt! I checked my SG last night and it was 1.024. I recalibrated my refractometer, it was reading 1.027 on 1.026 calibration fluid. So only off by .001. So that made my salinity actually 1.023, which I really don’t consider low. But nonetheless, I added about 1/2 a quart of salt to bring up the SG. I will have to retest later today to see what effect that much salt had on my salinity. In about 350 system gallons, it’s really not much salt.

Other than that, most surprising was calcium and Iron. I had been overdosing iron for a while, so it must mean that iron gets consumed quickly. Last night I dosed more iron, I dosed some manganese, and also mixed up a 5 gallon batch of kalkwasser. I’ll recheck things in a few days. And cobalt? Never even heard of dosing that.

What RODI do you use?

What RODI do you use?
My own home made. I bought a 2 stage spectrapure in the late 90’s. I have since added another carbon block, a poly filter, a DI resin chamber and a booster pump. So it’s 5 stage now, including the RO membrane. The order goes: 5 micron sediment, 5 micron carbon block, .5 micron carbon block, RO, then DI. This ICP test lets you send in an RO sample as well, and even though my TDS meter shows zero, there are impurities in my RO water, but nothing flagged as bad. Even still, I will change out the carbon blocks, the sediment filter and the RO membrane. I have the carbon blocks on hand but will have to order a new membrane.

Shouldn't the chlorine your ICP seeing be coming from the rodi?
